Well, this post is a lot later than anticipated! Harvest has been and gone – this year was our busiest to date, it felt like we never stopped. 2018 was a good year – here’s to an even better 2019. 2019 has so far taken the shape of various shows – LAMMA, Ripon Farm Services Show, Farmstar Open Day and YAMS on the horizon. We will be trialling Polysulphate on our home farm this year and will share the data here.
Happy New Year
Happy New Year to all of our customers, suppliers and readers. I will start 2019 by thanking our customers and suppliers throughout 2018. Without you we would not be able to continue to grow, step by step, little by little. Since offering our contracting services we have gradually added to the services we offer – this year we have added a hedge cutter, baler, rake and flail mower to ensure we can continue to offer services to cater for everyone’s needs.
Here are some of our favourite pictures from the last twelve months:

2019 Varieties
This year has seen a new variety on the farm in the shape of Senova’s Talisman Malting Barley. Picked for its high yielding, disease resitance and early maturing nature. This is the first time we have grown a winter malting Barley, following on from our success with Propino in the spring. KWS Zyatt makes a return and this year in the sole variety we will be growing. I was really impressed with the quality of the sample following harvest, it seems really suited to our land. Elgar makes the return as our Oil Seed Rape Variety.
Polysulphate
Having watched with interest the appearence of Polysulphate this year I have made the leap and will be trialling it across all of our crops on our home farm.
So what is Polysulphate? Polysulphate is the trademark name of Polyhalite, mined right here on the east coast of the United Kingdom, in the worlds first Polyhalite mine. Polysulphate contains Sulpher (48% SO3), Pottasium (14% K2O), Magnesium (6% MgO) and Calcium (17% CaO) – essential elements to unlock a crops full potential. Below image taken from Polysulphate website.
Having usually applied CF Doubletop or similar in Spring to apply sulpher, we hope that the additional Sulpher boost of Polysulphate along with the additional benefits will allow us to fully unlock our Group 1 bread making potentials, increasing the yield and quality, ensuring optimum uptake in Nitrogen. The product will be applied using variable rate technology along with MOP where required. With our land having recently been tested in September as part of our IPF Precision farming arrangements we felt there was no better time to run a trial. We will be using recommended rates of between 100kg/ha and 200kg/ha dependant on the crop and will continue to monitor and update here through the season.

Farm Shows
Last week started with a 200 mile round trip to the NEC, Birmingham for LAMMA ‘19 and what a show it was. The range of exhibitors was great with halls packed to the rafters with everything from waste carriers to the really big players in the agricultural world. The move to an inside show has to be lauded – I’m not sure that traipsing around in the January cold quite does it! Sadly I was that excited wandering around I forgot to take some pictures!
This week was a little closer to home with the Ripon Farm Services Show at the Yorkshire Show Ground. I remembered the camera this time! Again I felt that the show represented the dealership excellently, it was well thought out, well attended and plenty on show to see. Excellent work by the planners for this one and will certainly be a show we will return to.
YAMS – next up is YAMS – the exhibitor list looks great this year. I will be heading along with my shopping list! See you there.
