Our Story
Horncastle Farm is a 200 acre farm between Wakefield and Pontefract in West Yorkshire. The Stevens are the 5th generation of the family to farm the land here at Horncastle Farm and we could not be happier to continue the legacy, developing, diversifying and enjoying our time here. Lucy, Chad, Herbie, Arnie and Posie are the current custodians of the farm here.
Horncastle farm is red tractor assured, we provide fully funded school visits and open throughout periods of the year to welcome members of public here to the farm to experience British agriculture first hand.
With a passion for following a “field to fork” ethos 2025 marks the start of our farm retailing produce directly to you, our customers.
The beginning
The farm was established by John Henry Wellburn who moved to Yorkshire from Lincolnshire in the early 1900’s and as a mixed enterprise cattle and arable farm. Many a year was spent alongside his son John William Wellburn ploughing these very fields by horse.
John William had one son John Kenneth, known as Ken. The picture here is Ken and his dad walking down the driveway at the farm in 1962 – this field currently houses our sheep!
Progression
As times progressed, the farm moved to a fully arable enterprise with John Kenneth Wellburn taking over the reigns. Ken was extremely proud of the farm, his efforts and the being a potato supplier to Walker’s crisps. Prior to his passing in 2014 we were all extremely proud to help him bring in his final harvest – you could certainly say technology on the combine has come on!
The Present
Our story took a defining turn in 2014, after the passing of Ken. At the time, neither Lucy nor Chad had formal farming experience beyond helping during summer holidays. But with the support of our incredible long-time employee Martin — who dedicated over 50 years to this land — and our kind neighbours, we jumped in with both feet.
Since then, we’ve grown traditional British crops like wheat, barley, and oilseed rape. More recently, driven by our passion for regenerative agriculture, we introduced sheep back into our rotation — a return to early farming practices here at Horncastle. Grazing animals now play a vital role in improving soil health and reducing our reliance on chemical inputs.
We are proud to farm with an ethos rooted in environmental care and animal welfare. Every step we take is guided by sustainability and transparency. We raise our animals to the highest welfare standards and are committed to welcoming our community to see it all firsthand.
In 2022, we opened our gates to the public with a hands-on lamb feeding experience. What began as a seasonal event has grown into an annual event where you can help feed lambs, goats, and calves — a truly immersive way to experience life on the farm.
Our offerings continue to grow. In 2025, we opened our very own coffee shop on-site, marking the beginning of our journey into direct-to-customer meat sales. From our pasture-raised Dexter cattle and Saddleback pigs to our diverse flocks of sheep, we’re proud to offer food that’s born, raised, and prepared right here on our land.
That same year, we also welcomed four beehives to the farm — and with them, our first jars of homegrown Horncastle Honey.
Whether you’re visiting us for a family day out, a coffee in the countryside, or to shop our produce, we invite you to be part of our journey — one that celebrates British farming, sustainability, and real food.
Awards
British Farming Family of the year 2025
In 2025, we were incredibly proud to be named a finalist for the British Farming Family of the Year award. Although we didn’t take home the top prize, being recognised among the UK’s most dedicated and inspiring farming families was an honour we’ll always cherish.
"We farm with an ethos rooted in environmental care and animal welfare. Every step we take is guided by sustainability and transparency".
